Japanese Studios Including Ghibli Warn OpenAI Over AI Training Use

Several Japanese animation studios, which has been including the world-renowned Studio Ghibli, have now raised serious concerns over the use of copyrighted anime content.

This has all been used in the field of AI training models by all the famous companies, such as OpenAI.

The studios have also issued a collective warning, which has thus emphasised the need for ethical AI development and stronger copyright protections in the creative industry.

According to the recent reports, Japanese creators are also very worried that AI-generated art and animation are being produced using their original works that too without their proper consent.

Studios like Ghibli, Toei Animation, and even MAPPA have called for transparency in data collection and have also demanded that AI developers help to disclose the sources used for model training.

They would also argue that unlicensed use of copyrighted material not only violates all aspects of intellectual property rights, but it is also a major cause that undermines the creativity and even the livelihoods of artists and animators.

Studio Ghibli, which is also known for masterpieces like Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, has also now taken a firm stance against all the AI tools that imitate hand-drawn animation styles.

The studio has also stated that such technology could lead to erosion of traditional craftsmanship and can also be a reason to dilute the cultural value of Japanese animation.

In response, OpenAI has also reiterated its commitment to the approach of responsible AI training practices and has stated that it is open to collaborating with creators and even policymakers to ensure fair use and protection of all aspects of artistic rights.

The debate highlights the growing global tension between the field of AI innovation and even the creative ownership, that too, particularly in industries that rely heavily on originality and artistic expression.
